Vatican City Exhibition Celebrates Global Journeys Through Fashion, Music, and Art

The Vatican's "En Route" exhibition uniquely fuses fashion, music, and art, celebrating Victorian women explorers and global journeys, running from February 15 to December 20.

Captivating Fusion of Art Forms

Vatican City is currently home to the captivating exhibition titled “En Route,” where fashion, music, and illustration intertwine in a unique showcase.

This marks the sixth chapter in a series dedicated to celebrating the Vatican Library’s extensive history, which dates back to the 4th century, while simultaneously embracing contemporary artistic endeavors.

Empowering Stories of Exploration

The exhibition highlights a remarkable collaboration between Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, celebrated Italian musician Jovanotti, and Icelandic illustrator Kristjana S Williams.

Together, they explore the themes of global exploration, specifically reflecting on the journeys undertaken by daring individuals in the late 19th century.

Chiuri places particular emphasis on the stories of six Victorian women who defied the conventions of their time by venturing out into the world alone.

Partnering with the Chanakya School of Craft in India, she has produced vivid tapestries that depict the journeys of these trailblazers.

During a sneak peek of the exhibition, Chiuri discussed how these women urgently needed practical clothing, revealing that their initial change involved discarding corsets to enhance their comfort—especially for cycling adventures.

Jovanotti’s Unique Contributions

Jovanotti, a travel-loving singer-songwriter, adds his own flair to the exhibition.

He is showcasing a bicycle that has taken him across numerous countries, from China to Iran, New Zealand, and much of Latin America.

Jovanotti has also crafted a playful disco ball that doubles as a globe, employing reflective silver mirrors to symbolize oceans and gold accents to represent landmasses.

He humorously remarked that this addition adds a sense of fun to the Vatican’s atmosphere.

The exhibition’s title, “En Route,” derives from a travelogue published by two French journalists, Lucien Leroy and Henri Papillaud, documenting their global expeditions between 1895 and 1897.

Their project aimed to support their journeys through the sale of their travel publication. “En Route” will be open for public viewing from February 15 until December 20, inviting visitors to engage with the rich narratives of exploration and creativity.
