Appointment of Lord Evans
In a notable turn of events, the Prime Minister has appointed Lord Evans of Weardale, the former head of MI5, to chair the Crown Nominations Commission (CNC).
This committee holds the crucial task of selecting the new Archbishop of Canterbury.
Lord Evans’ Background
With a distinguished career at MI5 that spanned 33 years, Lord Evans served as director general from 2007 to 2013.
His experience in security and leadership is expected to provide valuable insight during this selection process.
After retiring, he became an active crossbench peer in the House of Lords, where he chaired the Committee on Standards in Public Life from 2018 until 2023.
Beyond his contributions to the Lords, Lord Evans is currently at the helm of HALO Trust, an organization dedicated to removing landmines, and he participates on the Public Interest Committee at KPMG UK.
He also remains involved in his local community through his role in the parish church.
Selection Process for the New Archbishop
The resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby was announced in November 2024, following a review that identified his failure to adequately report allegations of abuse concerning the late barrister John Smyth back in 2013.
It’s important to note that the selection process for the new Archbishop will not allow direct applications.
Instead, the public is invited to put forward nominations.
Notably, there will be no shortlist or hustings ahead of the new appointment, which is expected in the autumn of 2025.
Archbishop Welby is set to conclude his ministry with final duties on the Feast of Epiphany, January 6, 2025.
In the interim between his departure and the installation of his successor, the Archbishop of York will assume his responsibilities.
