With the recent shift in U.S. leadership, new opportunities have emerged for women in the Middle East to take the helm of initiatives aimed at promoting peace and interfaith cooperation.
A significant milestone in this movement is the formation of the Abraham Women’s Alliance (AWA), created specifically in response to the rising conflicts in the region.
Shirin Taber, co-founder and director of the AWA, highlighted research underscoring the critical role that women-led initiatives play in fostering peace.
Following the attacks on October 7, the Alliance has been convening monthly meetings that bring together leaders from various Abrahamic faiths to share women’s stories and explore their proposed solutions.
This innovative platform empowers leaders to advocate for peaceful coexistence, reflecting the commitments made by the United Nations and the U.S. State Department against religious conflicts.
Goals of the Abraham Women’s Alliance
Taber pointed out that while many organizations focus on documenting violence in the Middle East, the AWA aims to redirect the conversation toward the positive impacts that women’s contributions can have on peace efforts.
She expressed a strong desire to inspire leaders to engage in interfaith collaboration, especially under the new presidential administration, and laid out plans to broaden their activities throughout 2025.

She envisions creating a collaborative network that highlights the efforts of women advocates and utilizes digital platforms to champion coexistence.
Research supports the notion that when women have the freedom to share their views and ideas, they become more entrepreneurial and catalyze positive changes in society.
Empowering women not only boosts economic growth but also lays the groundwork for lasting peace and stability.
However, many women in the Middle East encounter significant barriers to their social, economic, and political rights, entrenched in cultural norms and institutional practices.
Their underrepresentation in peace negotiations is troubling, especially since studies indicate that including women in these discussions significantly increases the chances of durable peace agreements.
Advancing Peace Efforts
Women’s participation is crucial for promoting normalization and advancing the peace efforts outlined in the Abraham Accords.
Professor Lindsay Benstead asserted that the effectiveness of the Accords hinges on women’s full and equal involvement, which is vital for the security and prosperity of the region as a whole.
She stressed the significance of ensuring women can participate in negotiations on par with men, along with backing initiatives that offer financial support to female entrepreneurs and civil organizations.
By fully integrating women into these processes, the efficacy of the Accords could be greatly enhanced, further solidifying the objectives of public diplomacy for all parties involved.
