A heartbreaking event unfolded in eastern Uganda, where a Muslim family who had recently embraced Christianity lost their lives.
Kaiga Muhammad, aged 64, his wife Sawuya Kaiga, and their 26-year-old son Swagga Amuza Kaiga made the pivotal decision to convert to Christianity after being drawn in by the gospel message shared by a nearby church.
Conversion and Challenges
In the weeks following their conversion, the family sought support from their new church community for Swagga, who had been battling malaria.
According to the pastor, Swagga showed remarkable improvement after the congregation prayed for him.
Despite this newfound faith, the family felt compelled to keep their beliefs hidden, fearing the ramifications from the local Muslim population.
Kaiga Muhammad had once been a dedicated member of the local mosque.
Escalation of Tension
Trouble began when local Muslims noticed Muhammad attending church services in a neighboring village.
This raised alarms, prompting them to inform the community leader, Wangule Abudu.
The following day, Abudu confronted Muhammad in his home, where Muhammad openly acknowledged his family’s conversion to Christianity.
Abudu promptly issued a week-long ultimatum, demanding that Muhammad renounce his new faith.
He warned that failure to comply would incite local Muslims against the family.
Tragic Outcome
A relative, who wished to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, revealed that Abudu accused them of disrespecting Allah and betraying the Muslim community.
The situation escalated into violence as a mob of local Muslims attacked the family’s home, setting it on fire and claiming the lives of all three family members.
Despite the swift arrival of emergency responders, it was too late to save the victims.
Local authorities later arrested Wangule Abudu and Ismail Njagi, charging them with murder and arson.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Bumanya Health Centre for a postmortem examination.
This tragic incident underscores the severe persecution that Christians endure in Uganda, a situation highlighted by various organizations, including Morning Star News.
While Uganda’s constitution promises religious freedom, those who choose to convert often face significant challenges, particularly within the nation’s small Muslim minority.
