New South Wales Boosts Police Resources Amid Rising Antisemitic Incidents

In response to rising antisemitic incidents linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict, New South Wales increases police resources to combat targeted violence against Jewish communities.

Enhanced Police Response

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — In response to a worrying uptick in antisemitic incidents, the New South Wales government has decided to bolster police resources dedicated to combating these crimes.

This announcement follows a distressing act of vandalism at a childcare center located near a synagogue in Maroubra early Tuesday, where anti-Jewish graffiti was scrawled on the walls before the facility was set ablaze.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the damage was significant.

Recent Incidents and Government Actions

This incident of arson is part of a concerning pattern of targeted attacks throughout major Australian cities, especially Sydney and Melbourne, which have become hotspots for such activities since the Israel-Hamas conflict reignited on October 7, 2023.

Notably, these two cities are home to about 85% of the Jewish population in Australia.

The violent incidents have ranged from assaults on vehicles to damage to buildings.

A particularly alarming case involved an individual who suffered burns due to a fire at a Melbourne synagogue last December.

Amidst this rise in antisemitic crimes, Acting Police Commissioner Peter Thurtell announced an expansion of resources for Strike Force Pearl, a task force that was created earlier this year specifically to address these offenses in the Sydney area.

Community and Law Enforcement Response

Thurtell underscored that enhancing support is essential for successfully identifying and prosecuting offenders.

He described these acts of violence as threats to community harmony and reiterated the commitment of the New South Wales Police Force to bring those responsible to justice.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns voiced his serious concern about the increase in antisemitic incidents, describing it as a significant issue for the state.

He openly acknowledged the distress felt within the affected community but also expressed confidence in law enforcement’s efforts, highlighting recent progress in apprehending offenders.

Over the past weeks, authorities arrested nine individuals linked to three antisemitic attacks in Sydney, with all detained suspects remaining in custody.

Among those arrested was 34-year-old Tammie Farrugia, who was taken into custody at her home in Sydney.

She appeared in court regarding her alleged involvement in a December 11 attack in Woollahra, an area well-known for its Jewish demographic.

This particular attack featured hateful graffiti containing misspellings and menacing messages like “Kill Israiel” and “Death 2 Israiel,” as well as vandalism to parked vehicles.

Farrugia faces several charges, including involvement with a criminal group, and investigators continue their search for two individuals who allegedly assisted her.

At her court hearing, she did not enter a plea or request bail, with a follow-up appearance scheduled for February 5.

In light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the New South Wales Police launched Operation Shelter to bolster safety amid pro-Palestinian protests that erupted in Sydney.

According to Thurtell, the operation has led to more than 180 arrests, including 40 individuals charged specifically for antisemitic offenses.

The 2021 census indicates that approximately 117,000 Jewish individuals live in Australia, making up roughly 0.46% of the nation’s population of 25.4 million.

Additionally, the Australian government reports that, on a per capita basis, only Israel has a greater number of Holocaust survivors residing within its borders than Australia.
