Healing from Childhood Trauma Through the Lens of Spiritual Warfare

Chuck Lawless shares his journey of healing from childhood trauma and emphasizes the importance of recognizing spiritual warfare in personal struggles and ministry.

For more than thirty years, I have immersed myself in the study of spiritual warfare, sharing my understanding through various avenues, including the “Church Equip” course from Church Answers entitled “Engaging in Spiritual Warfare.” This course embodies the core principles I have communicated throughout my educational journey.

Early Life and Spiritual Awakening

However, I rarely discuss the personal experiences that drove me toward this exploration of spiritual conflict.

My early life was marked by my father’s struggles with alcohol and his unpredictable, violent outbursts.

One of my earliest memories centers around an explosive incident triggered by my mother’s late return from grocery shopping.

The chaos that ensued still echoes vividly in my mind even after six decades.

These haunting experiences remain vivid, untouched by my conversion to Christianity at the age of thirteen.

As a child, I often found myself caught in the crossfire between my parents; both seemed larger than life to my young self.

I fiercely tried to protect my mother as she quaked and wept under my father’s verbal assaults.

My fear of him eventually morphed into resentment during my teenage years, culminating in a profound hatred.

Despite my spiritual awakening at thirteen, these feelings didn’t vanish overnight.

Instead, they left me in turmoil—an internal struggle I would later recognize as the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

It took me fifteen years to begin the healing journey, where my studies in spiritual warfare intertwined with my personal story.

Identifying the True Enemy

The transformation began unexpectedly when I revisited a well-known Bible verse.

Its message hit home: our battles are not against flesh and blood, but rather against powerful forces in the unseen realm.

This realization shifted my perspective; my father wasn’t my true enemy.

Instead, there was a dark spiritual influence intent on keeping me mired in fear, anger, and unforgiveness, seeking to entrap me in bitterness toward my earthly father.

Identifying the real adversary was a pivotal moment in my healing journey concerning my relationship with my dad.

With this newfound clarity, I found it easier to pray for his salvation, which eventually came to fruition when he accepted Christ at seventy-one.

It was awe-inspiring to witness; the man who once instilled fear in me transformed into someone who radiated love, joy, and peace—clear evidence of God’s transformative power.

Lessons Learned

  • My prayer life has taken on a new depth.

Recognizing a genuine spiritual foe who seeks to deceive and destroy has encouraged me to pray more fervently, engaging in spiritual warfare through earnest supplication.

  • I’ve grown in compassion for those who feel lost.

Understanding that many are caught in spiritual blindness propels me to share God’s message of redeeming grace with everyone, regardless of their past.

  • My approach to conflicts in the church has shifted significantly.

By understanding that individuals are not my enemies, I tackle issues with genuine love and care, instead of animosity.

  • Forgiveness has become a more accessible practice for me.

While I still emphasize personal accountability against worldly temptations and spiritual forces, it’s easier to extend forgiveness to others.

We are all part of the same battle.

  • My training methods for equipping believers in evangelism have also evolved.

I now underscore the necessity of preparing believers to shine the light of the Gospel in dark places, ensuring they are armed with God’s complete armor and effective prayer strategies.

  • I’ve adopted a greater focus on understanding the stories of those I mentor.

Many carry their own hidden scars but choose silence.

Creating a safe space for sharing is vital, as silence can often perpetuate additional bondage.

  • My passion for ministry has only intensified.

Although spiritual warfare can be daunting, the victory that Christ has already secured serves as a powerful reminder of our duty to declare both His past accomplishments and ongoing triumphs over evil.

I sincerely hope that you, too, may find victory over your adversary today!
