In the wake of a heartbreaking school shooting in Wisconsin that took the lives of both a teacher and a student, community members have rallied together, launching various fundraising efforts to aid the impacted families.
In just three weeks, these initiatives have successfully raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Community Fundraising Efforts
One notable campaign is a GoFundMe effort aimed at providing financial relief to those affected by the tragic events at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, which occurred on December 16.
As of Tuesday afternoon, this campaign has gathered over $27,000 of its ambitious $250,000 goal.
The organizer of the campaign explained that the funds will cover funeral costs, lost income, and educational resources for the children who have been affected, while also catering to any unexpected expenses that may arise.
Interestingly, the fundraiser will also make it possible for the children of the deceased teacher to experience a trip to Disney World, a journey she had planned with her daughters for the upcoming spring.
Support from Local Organizations
Moreover, in the aftermath of the crisis, the United Way of Dane County stepped forward with the establishment of the Abundant Life Christian School Emergency and Recovery Fund.
This initiative aims to extend support to those enduring the aftermath of the shooting.
According to Madison365, around 1,440 generous donors have contributed approximately $240,740 to this vital fund.
Additionally, the United Way has joined forces with 66 Culver’s restaurants throughout Wisconsin, which have agreed to donate a fraction of their profits from a designated Monday to benefit families affected by the tragedy.
Each restaurant will vary in the percentage they contribute, but they are committed to informing customers about their donations to raise further awareness.
Gratitude and Future Steps
Renee Moe, President and CEO of the United Way of Dane County, conveyed her heartfelt condolences and reiterated her dedication to fostering healing within the community.
She highlighted how essential it is for everyone to come together, reminding us that every contribution counts in this challenging period.
Principal Doug Butler of Abundant Life Christian School expressed heartfelt thanks to the community for the extensive support and assistance from United Way.
He indicated that more detailed information about the fund distribution will follow as the specific needs of the families and school community become clearer.
In a letter directed to the United Way, Butler shared his gratitude for the remarkable outpouring of support and outlined how the funds should be prioritized.
His focus included addressing the immediate financial strain on families who have suffered loss, helping with medical expenses for those injured, and providing mental health resources for students, staff, and families affected by this tragic incident.
Founded in 1978, Abundant Life Christian School is dedicated to Christian educational values and caters to around 390 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The school’s mission stands as a testament to the spirit of resilience in the face of tragedy, as the community unites to support one another during this profoundly difficult time.
